Bite Sized Episode Answering Your Listener Questions
Episode 17 Season 2: I took notes so you didn’t have to…. So grab your apron and let's get into it!
Today I am digging into the listener question candy bag and pulling out a few to answer! But before we get started if you are looking to jump in and attend the march for women’s reproductive rights in DC, Boston, or nationwide this weekend, May 14th, please see more information here. And if you are looking to donate to and support a person’s right to choose, please look here.
So I am running into the same thing that I feel a lot of us may be facing at home, with grocery prices surging I am making a huge effort to buy what we need and trying to not waste. Sometimes food spoils on us quicker than we would like. One hack that I found to be useful in my own kitchen is washing my berries in a water/white vinegar solution. It seems to help the berries last a little longer in the fridge. You can read more about it here.
With the weather heating up, it’s time to chat more about grilling! I was asking Todd if there was something else I could put on the grill to help with the dreaded “sticking” problem. I mean I know I can use cooking spray but I don’t like spray them on the grill and really I don’t know what’s actually in them so that’s a whole other can of worms we don’t need to open right now. So he suggested doing what they do in the kitchens on a professional level. He recommended getting the grill hot, scrapping off of the cooked on bits and then wiping the grill with an oiled (think high heat oil like vegetable oil, grape seed oil, etc) cloth and tongs and wipe the grill down. It should help the food not to stick. The other tip is don’t flip until the food is ready to be flipped. Through some trial and error you will figure out what protein or veggies feel like when they are ready to be flipped. When it’s ready to be flipped it will give away easily from the grill and BAM!
Cooking outside your comfort zone advice, well this advice needs to be tailored to your skill level, what makes you juiced up and bottom line, what you define as fun. For me I love trying a new spice blend like this one from Tuk Tuk Lex and Spicewalla. Or maybe it’s a new cookbook that gets you excited like Coconuts and Sambal or these from Yotam Ottolenghi. Or if a food blog is more your speed then check out Immaculate Bites or Metemgee. Either way there is something so fun about cooking outside your comfort zone and taking your taste buds on a vacation someone where special.
Summer Cocktail Ideas, well at the moment I am pretty boring when it comes to my cocktails. I love a blanco tequila and seltzer with tons of lime. I also love the Yuzu Lime mixer from Fever Tree. I will NEVER say no to an Aperol Spritz or a well made Negroni. But if you are looking for more inspiration then check out this article from Food and Wine. They all sound super good and honestly as I am typing this, sitting the sun, I am dreaming of a cute server to come up and hand me a fun cocktail. If only my pup Oliver knew how to make a good cocktail!!

Baking Beautiful Cakes 101
Episode 16 Season 2: I took notes so you didn’t have to…. So grab your apron and let's get into it!
Today we are chatting with the incredible Sarah McKinley all about baking and creating celebration cakes!! She has recently started a new business located on the New Hampshire seacoast so if you live in the area and need an AMAZING cake make sure to check her out for sure.
If you are a wine lover and haven’t checked out our conversation from season one make sure you give that a listen!
Sarah has turned a once passion into a thriving business and knows a thing or two about baking beautiful cakes. When it comes to baking, well really anything it takes practice, practice, practice. Anyone who does anything and makes it look “easy” I almost can promise you has spent hours, days, months, years practicing and perfecting their craft to make it “look” as effortless as it does. If you are determined and put in the time I am a firm believer you can accomplish pretty much anything.
Sarah and I chat about a lot in our conversation but here’s a few of the highlights.
Here are some of her favorite resources…

Bite Sized Episode with Yours Truly
Episode 15 Season 2: I took notes so you didn’t have to…. So grab your apron and let's get into it!
Today we are having some coffee and catching up together. Dare I say, ‘Coffee Talk’…old SNL reference for you there. It’s a fun bite sized episode with yours truly and I love it! Ok so what’s new….this cookbook from Half Baked Harvest, that’s what!! I really recommend the cookbook. I have been cooking from it for a few weeks now and all the recipes are incredible. So if you are looking for a new one to add to your collection, grab it for sure.
Roasted Strawberries is a great way to turn MEH berries into YUM. It helps concentrate the flavors and making those little red gems really shine. I love Michelle Polzine’s recipe from 20th Century Cafe in SF. You can get it here. Carve out some time for the roasting as it takes 3 - 6 hours but it’s so so so worth it!
Wanna make flour tortilla as home from scratch? Here’s a great recipe to get you going. Super duper easy, requires really no equipment and you can have fresh flour tortillas in less than 30 mins start to finish for sure. Or if you want to buy flour tortillas, these are AMAZING! If you prefer corn, and want to buy them verse making them I love this company.
