Gardening and Growing with Poplar Brooks Farm

Season 4, Episode 9: I took notes so you didn’t have to…. So grab your beverage of choice and let's get into it!

I don’t know about you but Spring has finally Sprung here in New England and fingers crossed the last frost is behind us so we can all start planning our $1,000.00 salads and get ready for summer veggie season with our raised beds and container gardens! So I thought what better time to sit down with a gardening expert than Eric from Poplar Brooks Farm! They are a wonderful little farm serving the community in Southern Maine with their delicious veggies! Make sure you follow them on social media to see when they will be at a farmers market near you this summer for sure!!!

Eric and I cover a lot of ground in our conversation and I wanted highlight a few things I jotted down! If you are looking from some non GMO seeds then check out High Mowing Seeds for sure. They have wonderful quality seeds which is what you want to start with for sure when it comes to the veggies you are going to consume. It might be a little late to grow things from seed but I am also a firm believer that if there’s a will there’s a way so if you want to grow stuff from seed then make sure you have some grow lights (color not super important) and a rack system for where you are growing these fabulous seeds. Keep the on them for 14 - 16 hours per day and make sure they are watered but not overwatered and you may want to sing some Sinatra or possibly Motown. I mean whatever tickles your fancy but show them some love for sure.

If you are looking for some plants and herbs to grow here in the Northeast that are little more forgiving then others check out the list below that both Eric and I rattled off…

  • Lettuces

  • Herbs

  • Spinach

  • Chives

  • Asparagus *don’t harvest until year 3 if you can, it’ll help the plants get stronger.

  • Strawberries

  • Sugar Snaps and Green Beans

  • Tomatoes (my favorite)

  • Sage

  • Rosemary

  • Lavender

Now forth and cook/eat some amazing food!!

All Things Greece with Pemi and Tanya

Season 4, Episode 4: I took notes so you didn’t have to…. So grab your beverage of choice and let's get into it!

Oh man was this a fun episode. I love Greece. I love the people, the food, the culture. It’s been on a bucket list to visit for many years and after speaking with Pemi and Tanya from WorldwideGreeks.com and BostonGreeks.com I am buying a plane ticket much sooner than later for sure. These incredible women have release not one but two cookbooks!!! So if you are like me and want more Greek food in your life then you need to grab these cookbooks, Cooking Greek Cookbook and Baking Baklava Cookbook. Not only will you be cooking some amazing Greek food but by purchasing these books you are also supporting some incredible women who are self published entrepreneurs.

In our conversation we bounce around to a lot of topics but one very very important one is where to find really good feta. I mean there’s some great brands based in the US but if you want some authentic Greek Feta the gal suggest a brand called Dodoni. It’s a blend of sheep and goat’s milk which gives it a more authentic taste than I lot of what you find here in the US which tends to be cow’s milk based. I also feel like the feta in the states can be very salty verse the creamy and smooth tasting feta you’d get in Greece.
