Deep Dive into Coffee Part One

Episode 22 Season 2: I took notes so you didn’t have to…. So grab your apron and let's get into it!

I love coffee. I have always had a love affair with coffee. I love holding a beautifully made mug while drinking my coffee. I love the coziness of it, the taste, the caffeine boast, honestly all of it. I am also striving to find my perfect cup of coffee and my guest today is trying to help us all do that! Today my guest is Monica Rosales, She was in the coffee industry for 20+ years and has seen the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to all things coffee. So grab your favorite cup of coffee and let’s dive in!

When striving for the perfect cup of coffee you need to start at the beginning…the beans!

What type of coffee person are you? Light roast? Dark roast? Do you like a thinner cup of coffee or something maybe with a little more body when you drink it? If you don’t know well then maybe do a little coffee lab at your own home and experiment with a few types and see what you actually like. Remember to ask yourself, “Is this pleasing to me?” If it is, than AWESOME!

Ok so you found the type of coffee person you are, Great! Now when it comes to picking your bag of coffee only buy what you need. Don’t buy enough to “stock up”. The key with coffee is freshness. So if you can buy the coffee directly from a roaster you love then even better but if you are using the grocery store, no problem. Check your coffee bean for a date on when it was roasted or even the best buy date. The fresher the better!

Do you have a coffee grinder at home? Not a spice grinder but a coffee grinder. If you are grinding your own beans try only grinding what you are going to drink that day or a few days in advance.

No coffee grinder, no problem! There may be a coffee grinder at the market or place you are purchasing your coffee and grind for your method of brewing. If you’re buying pre-ground coffee than hopefully you are using a drip coffee maker because pre-ground coffee you buy at the store is really made for drip coffee makers only.

A few other things to look for on your coffee bag is “hand picked” and “single origin” both lead to a better cup of coffee for various reasons that we get into in our conversation. Another thing to look for is fair trade and organic or smaller producers that may not be able to afford those label of organic because they can’t afford the certifications but they most likely are.

Ok so you bought your coffee now let’s talk about storing it…air tight container, away from heat and light. DON’T PUT IT IN YOUR FREEZER!!!

Check back next week for so so much more from Monica and we are getting into your listener questions and I promise by the end of our conversation your next cup of coffee will be even better!
