Let’s Buy a Farm

Episode 38: I took notes so you didn’t have to….

today we are talking a little about buying a farm in your 30’s with Linda from Tangerini’s!

Tangerini’s is an incredible farm about 45 mins west of Boston and has a lot going on. They have a great CSA program, ice cream stand, restaurant, event space, PYO throughout the year and so much more. The owners, Linda and Steve, took over this beautiful property in 2019 and have turned an already established farm into an even more vibrant and youthful place. It’s family friendly, relaxing and one of my favorite places close by to get my produce.

When Linda isn’t busy on the farm or being a mom to (soon to be) 2 beautiful kiddos she is also working on a Food Community called Food Quirk! It will go live in a few weeks and it’s a fun, totally inclusive community of food lovers!

A lot of us out there in the world have all day dreamed about a simpler life at times. My husband, Todd, for example always talks about how he wishes he could live in the 1700’s. He loves the idea of going back to a simpler time for a minute. That’s not my day dream, I love flush toilets, not dying at 35 and a being in a period in time where women have rights. But I do love the idea of having a farm for a minute. I know it’s really not for me. I mean I don’t even camp let alone go out at 4am to muck something or pull a weed or whatever you have to do at 4am on a farm.

But my guest today did buy a farm and live out that dream. Her and her husband have had their hands in dirt for sometime now and decided a few years ago to take the plunge and go for it! They bought a 65 acre working fruit and veggie farm about 45 mins outside of Boston all under the age of 40. I think it’s incredible. There are days that I wake up and I have that teenage feeling of “I just don’t wanna” and in my line of work I can afford to have a day or two like that and it won’t make or make my bottom line but I image when you own a farm you have to show up every day and get your hands dirty.

I thought it would be fun to include a few recipes for fruits and veggies that are in season right now. That’s the end of season tomatoes/eggplants, pumpkins, dark greens (kale etc), beets, carrots, butternut squash, etc..

Recipes:

Linda was kind enough to include her spiced Cantaloupe Tea Cake Recipe:

Spiced Cantaloupe Tea Cake

Ingredients:

• 3 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 3/4 tsp cinnamon ground

• 1 1/2 tsp salt

• 1 tsp ginger ground

• 1 tsp baking soda

• 1 tsp baking powder

• 2 cups sugar granulated

• 3 large eggs

• 1 cup vegetable oil

• 2 tsp vanilla extract

• 1 3/4 cups cantaloupe ripe, diced and smashed with a pastry blender (only the flesh)

Directions:

Heat the oven to 350 F degrees. Grease and flour two 5×8 inch loaf pans. Combine the flour, cinnamon, salt, ginger, baking soda, and baking powder in a medium bowl.

With an electric mixer or a whisk, beat the sugar, eggs, oil, and vanilla in a bowl until well blended and slightly frothy. Fold in the grated cantaloupe. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and fold until just blended; don't overmix or your tea cakes will be tough.

Divide the batter between the loaf pans and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out dry, about 1 hour.

Let cool on a rack, then invert. Serve just slightly warm or at room temperature.

Now go forth and cook/eat some amazing food!!
